July gathering report

June 27, 2006

We had an interesting gathering of the Byron Sustainable Ventures Network on 11th July at Rob Moussalli's place in Tyagarah.

Apart from all the usual mingling and networking and conversations,

Arion showed a short presentation of a 3D model of the sound temple design he's been working on for a long time.

Wadzy told us about the project to create a community mandala garden in Mullumbimby, and showwed us photos of the one he built in El Salvador. It will be designed as an educational project, and might be on public space or at one of the schools.

Ken told us about Hundred Hearts, and their excellent launch event about the Cuban response to peak oil. He also told us about plans for a sustainability conference next year.

I (Mitra) talked about the progress towards a fiber-based plastic factory in byron (www.zelfoaustralia.com), we had been looing at a building in Mullum to share with a number of businesses, but dropped the project when we realised that while it had the right zoning it would take a change of use, with the inevitable council-induced delays, risks of not being able to go forward and costs.

On Oliver's sugestion, we had some interesting conversations, about transparancy and accountability, about the challenges when a good product (e.g. biodegradable cellophane bags) is made by a dirty process, or by a company with a bad track record.
